San Francisco is leading the way in waste reduction with a cutting-edge IoT approach.

The city of San Francisco is facing a modern-day issue that has been threatening its environment for decades: overflowing waste. Cities across the world are beginning to use big data and analytics to reduce environmental pollution, yet San Francisco continued to struggle with this issue. With the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), cities now have an opportunity to become more efficient in utilizing available resources while reducing their environmental footprint. 

In this blog post, we will explore how AI and IoT are helping to transform garbage collection for The City by The Bay. We'll look at how these technologies work together to tackle overflowing waste, informing CIOs and IoT experts on the best practices they can deploy now--and what they need to do before implementing such solutions in their own region or city.

San Francisco has experienced a stunning 80% reduction in overflowing trash bins thanks to their partnership with Nord Sense. (And although Nord Sense is not a MACH Networks partner, we did want to share this innovative use of IoT and Ai and give our partners some new ideas on how to expand their markets with remote connectivity of devices and improve living conditions for the general public). 

By installing 1,000 smart sensors connected directly to the company's online platform, the San Francisco Department of Public Works is able to monitor bin fill levels, temperature, and movements in real-time and send out waste disposal trucks before any overcapacity issues arise. This reduced illegal dumping by 64% and sanitation complaints were cut in half.  This innovative data solution brings cleaner streets for citizens of The City by the Bay, dramatically reducing public complaints from 10,000 per year.
